Scotland’s first Valeda photobiomodulation clinic for treatment of dry AMD

In 2024 Peter Ivins Eye Care were the first practice in Scotland to launch a photobiomodulation clinic using the Valeda system from LumiThera for the treatment of dry age-related macular disease. The aim of this clinic is to use this ground-breaking, first of its kind technology to slow the progression of macular degeneration.

Initial assessment:

A 90 minute suitability assessment involves a detailed examination of the eye to ascertain your suitability for Valeda treatment. This involves high and low contrast visual acuity measurements and macular sensitivity testing to document your precise level of vision. Ultra-high definition imaging of the retina to document key characteristics of AMD (areas of atrophy, number and size of drusen), optical coherence tomography (OCT) to evaluate the structure of the macula and retina , OCT-Angiography to document the blood supply to the macula, Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF) to evaluate the metabolism of the retina, and use of advanced AI programmes to evaluate and track changes in macular health overtime.

Valeda Treatment sessions:

Valeda treatment takes around 5 minutes per eye. Treatments are conducted 3 times per week, on 3 consecutive weeks, 3 times per year. A total of 27 treatment sessions in blocks of 9 are conducted in annually. These treatments are quick, painless and safe.

Macular monitoring:

Before embarking on your next round of 9 treatments we conduct a 30-60 minute review of your macular health. During which we repeat all the measurements taken during the initial suitability assessment. We can then utilise various software systems to analyse changes in the macula before deciding to start the next round of treatment
