Scotland’s First Dedicated Valeda Photobiomodulation Clinic for Dry AMD

In 2024, Peter Ivins Eye Care became the first practice in Scotland to launch a clinic offering photobiomodulation therapy using the Valeda system from LumiThera for the treatment of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This pioneering clinic uses state-of-the-art technology to slow the progression of macular degeneration, providing patients with a proactive approach to preserving vision.

Initial Assessment

Your journey begins with a comprehensive 90-minute suitability assessment. This detailed examination evaluates your eligibility for Valeda treatment through a series of precise measurements, including:

  • High and low contrast visual acuity tests and macular sensitivity checks to determine your current vision levels.
  • Ultra-high-definition retinal imaging to document AMD features such as areas of atrophy and drusen size and number.
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to assess macular and retinal structure.
  • OCT-Angiography to examine the blood supply to the macula.
  • Fundus Autofluorescence (FAF) to evaluate retinal metabolism.
  • Advanced AI-driven analysis to monitor and track changes in macular health over time.

Valeda Treatment Sessions

Each Valeda session is quick, painless, and safe, lasting approximately five minutes per eye. Treatments are delivered three times per week over three consecutive weeks, repeated three times annually, amounting to 27 sessions per year in blocks of nine.

Macular Monitoring

Before each new block of nine sessions, a 30–60 minute review of your macular health is conducted. This includes repeating all assessments from your initial visit and using advanced software to track any changes in the macula. This ensures a personalised and evidence-based approach to planning your next round of treatments.
